Test 1

Overview (PDF)

Practice Problems: The following problems and solutions from old 3.185 tests and homeworks should help you to get a sense for the kind of problems which might be asked on the first test.

Practice ProblemsSolutions
Heat Conduction
Cooling of a Little Plastic Widget (PDF)(PDF)
Finite Differences in Heat Conduction (PDF)(PDF)
Investment Casting Heat Transfer (PDF)(PDF)
Titanium-aluminum Alloy Thermal Conductivity (PDF)(PDF)
Dimensional Analysis (Diffusion)
Catalytic Combustion of Carbon Monoxide (PDF)(PDF)
Diffusion of a Zinc Coating (PDF)(PDF)

Test 2

Overview (PDF)

Practice Problems: The following problems and solutions from old 3.185 tests and homeworks should help you to get a sense for the kind of problems which might be asked on the second test.

Practice ProblemsSolutions
Solid-Liquid Processing
Electron Beam Centrifugal Atomization of Metal (PDF)(PDF)
Fluid Flow
Floating Bubbles out of Molten Glass (PDF)(PDF)
Laminar and Turbulent Boundary Layers (PDF)(PDF)
Turbulence and Mixing in a Tube (PDF)(PDF)
Titanium Nitride Inclusion Removal in an Electron Beam Melting Hearth (PDF)#(PDF)

Note: We only briefly covered the rate of growth of a turbulent boundary layer, you're not expected to know that (and not expected to memorize the rate of growth of a laminar boundary layer). And I don't believe we named the Prandtl number, it is the ratio nu/alpha for heat transfer and nu/D for mass transfer. For turbulent transport, both of these are just below one.
