Respecto a los textos "En invierno" y especialmente "El rei burgués."
Por favor, miren las imágenes de su interior y lean el texto sobre su historia. El caso es fascinante respecto a Darío. Aunque no puedo decir que Darío haya estado dentro del palacio, es probable que lo haya visto por fuera. Se construyó en los años '70, y Darîo estuvo en Chile (en Valparaíso y Santiago) entre 1886 y 1889. Valparaíso y Santiago constituyeron las primeras experiencias directas por parte de Darío con ciudades relativamente grandes y cosmopolitas. De hecho, el cuento "El rey burgués" se publicó primero en la publicación periódica La Epoca, en Santiago, el 4 de noviembre de 1887. Fue recogido el próximo año en la primera edición del libro Azul, publicada en Valparaíso.
Santiago, aunque nunca fue la capital más grande de la América del Sur, ni mucho menos, es la capital que sin embargo tuvo el crecimiento demográfico más rápido durante la primera mitad del siglo 19. Valparaíso igualmente tuvo un crecimiento comparativamente muy rápido durante ese mismo período. En 1875 la población de Santiago era apróximadamente 150.000. Diez años después, la población de la área urbana de la provincia de Santiago había llegado a 228.000, mientras que durante esa misma década, la población rural de la provincia había descendido de unos 180.000 a 102.000, comprobando un proceso significativo de urbanización durante estos años. También, no olviden que Darío llegó a Chile pocos años después del triunfo de este país, en 1883, en la Guerra del Pacífico, o sea, en una época en que el gobierno y ciertos sectores de la población chilena experimentaban un enorme aumento de divisas gracias a los ricos depósitos de salitre recién adquiridos.

Acontecimiento especial:
Puerto Rican author Rosario Ferré will be meeting with students and faculty over two days this semester. She will teach a class in Spanish to the combined classes 21F.730 and 21F.716. Students from both classes will have already read and studied common texts in Spanish by Ferré, and they will be well prepared to have an active, in-depth discussion with the author about three of her short stories and one of her novels. The first night, she will be giving a public lecture and reading in English to a general audience. The title of her talk will be "Spanish and English: Two Sides of the Looking Glass."
Ferré, one of the best known feminist writers in Puerto Rico, writes and publishes in both Spanish and English, and during the last decade has begun the practice of sometimes publishing her works of fiction and her essays first in English and then in her own Spanish "translations" or rewrites. In the public lecture, she will be talking about her relationship as a writer to both languages and cultures. During the day on the first day, she will meet at with our Latino students to discuss, in particular, issues of bilingualism and statehood vs. independence in Puerto Rico.
Ferré is a very prolific writer; her best known titles in English include The Youngest Doll, Sweet Diamond Dust, The House on The Lagoon, and Eccentric Neighborhoods.
