The Economics Department's highly regarded doctoral program enrolls about 22 students each year. The program was ranked as the best economics Ph.D. program in the United States in the most recent National Research Council study and was also ranked as tied for first by U.S. News and World Report.
In very special and rare cases, students who have already been admitted to the Ph.D. Program are granted permission to receive the S.M. in Economics. This degree is awarded upon the satisfactory completion of a program which has been approved by the chairman of the Graduate Committee, a year's full-time study and the presentation of a satisfactory thesis.

To be admitted into the graduate program, a student must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. It is not essential that the undergraduate degree be in economics. Graduate students entering the Department have had a wide variety of major background preparation, varying from literature to physics. However, some preparation in undergraduate economics, especially in economic theory, is a necessity. Similarly, a working knowledge of calculus is essential.
Completed application forms for admission must be submitted to the MIT Admissions Office by January 2 of the calendar year in which the applicant wishes to enter. Entrance is normally made in September. February entrance is granted only under exceptional circumstances, since many subjects given in the spring are extensions of subjects given in the fall.
All applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Original score reports must be received with other supporting materials by January 2. Photocopies are not acceptable.

Every effort is made within the Department's financial resources to provide help, if necessary, to students who are making satisfactory progress. While the Department offers a number of fellowships and assistantships, it is not possible for the Department to meet all requests for financial aid. Students should therefore explore alternative sources of assistance.
Entering students who wish to be considered for financial aid from MIT should so indicate in the appropriate box on the application form, due January 2. Awards are made by April 15, and generally cover the first two years of study.
