Traditionally, private colleges and institutes have always been preferred over community colleges and public colleges. One of the aspects that most people have always disliked about community colleges is its infrastructure, facilities and tools that it has on offer for the students. According to many, it lacks in quality and standard when compared with that of private colleges across the United States of America.

However, in Maryland, certain developments seem to contradict the above statements. The last few years have seen a downslide as far as enrollments in community colleges is concerned. According to a recent report, even the biggest community college of America witnessed a drop as massive as 17 percent in the overall enrollment. The college experienced this drop since the year 2009. If we look at the humungous number of students that this college accommodates, 17 percent looks like a gigantic figure.

Things have not been too good and encouraging in California. However, most of the community colleges outside California also do not have a great track record off late. Having said so, not every community college is coming under the scanner as far as drop in enrollment is concerned. The Carroll Community College in Maryland has seen a 1 percent increase in the number of enrollments.

According to administrators from the college, many students are showing keen interest in the associate’s degree. This degree program can be completed on a part-time basis and hence even working professionals are enrolling into it. This program alone has seen a rise of 3.3 percent. These are certainly encouraging signs for community colleges who can sigh a relief after all.

The records of New England also show similar results. Most of the students there are far more comfortable in attending community colleges instead of enrolling for a four year degree program. Many young individuals too are opting to get enrolled in a school.

One of the prime reasons for this rise is the fact that community colleges charge far lesser as compared to the private colleges that offer a four year degree program. One of the prime issues with higher education in America at the moment is the growing tuition fee.

Many families are not affording higher education for their child and this is turning out to be a very serious complication. However, with the help of community colleges and the fact they do not charge bizarre fee, families are looking at them as prospective options.

According to a student from New England ‘opting for a community college is a smarter idea as it is very cheap in terms of tuition fee’. She also added that facilities provided to students are good and bare lot of similarities with that offered at private colleges. This is soon turning to be what many fellow students are also thinking.

Overall, this seems to be a good sign for educational administrators in our country. After all, they want more numbers of citizens enrolling in higher education for the betterment of the economy.
