  • What should a school be like? Well... It should have a playground that is well maintained. It should also feature Swings, slides and other play activity equipments. These are on the outside and are very much required.

On the inside, the school should look very appealing. Nice paint, clean corridors, friendly staff and teachers. The classrooms should be bright in colour too and so much more. But what if the school authorities cannot do so because they do not have the budgets? Then it would be a very sad state of affair. A school at the end of the day should appeal to children. It is them who spend a good part of their day at school.

And the New York City schools are lucky where the matter of budgets is concerned. In the recent past, the New York City voters passed budgets for more than 600 schools and only 51 school budgets were decreased. This means that parents here believe that if the school’s budget is more, it means that their kids will be benefitting more. The parents and citizens here do not mind paying a little more tax for the good of their children and the schools.

A school with a good approved budget can be very useful. Firstly all the extra classes that are held in the school for the kids will be carried out with effect immediately. The school can hire better and more efficient staff members. Even the food and hygiene facilities will improve with a good budget. However, this 92% approval of budgets in the city is a drop from the 97% approval from the last budget election in the city. But then something is definitely better than nothing. No one is complaining.

Unfortunately not every state thinks this way. In fact in the state of New Jersey, many schools faced rejection for their budgets. This is because though the increased budget is good for the school, it means increase in the taxes. And the tax rates going up to 8.6%, people do not see a good reason to why the schools’ increased budgets should be approved. This could spell trouble in the coming months.

Many parents here think that the way in which the school is functioning currently, is good enough. They do not see a good reason to increase in budgets. Many blame the tight economic structure in the state as well. They are torn between higher budgets for schools which is good and paying higher taxes.

In Long Island, the school authorities urged the parents to vote for school budgets that did not stop the teachers’ salary hikes and some urgent requirements for the schools. Many are afraid that the teachers and the school staff may go on strike if such a budget doesn’t get approved.

It is time the government stepped in. education is a fundamental right and whatever required to get the best education, should be done. Education, by far, is the best key to ones success.
