On the outside every school, college and university looks the best. We feel they keep up with the law and all the norms, regulations and rules are followed. But on a closer look, a lot can startle you.

Something like this was found out when the president boroughs office realised that more than 2/3rd of the schools in Manhattan flout the school rules. As a logical process, fingers were pointed at the New York City Buildings Department. This is because, the NYBD is responsible for looking after all school buildings and repair-restructure them as and when required. This unfortunately, has not been carried out. Therefore, they will be charged for inefficiency, corruption and mismanagement.

So why is this happening? There is no definite answer of course. Are they slacking, the NYBD? They don’t care for the children studying here? Many many questions will have to be answered. Schools here have children of ages. Kids are known to be a little haphazard anyways and if the authorities…too don’t pay attention then we definitely have a huge casualty on our hands.

Who will be responsible if something happens to the school buildings? If they are already in a shabby state and still not looked after, it can then very well just collapse. A collapse of a school building will kill or injure scores of students and school staff members. But if the NYBD is not looking after the structures why isn’t the school itself doing the needful? Yes, this is wonderful question too.

Aren’t the schools responsible for the kids they have? Aren’t they responsible for the school structure too? Schools are either public schools or private schools. In case of private schools, a lot of funding comes in from the board members and the trustees. So why isn’t care being taken? Are they waiting for something horrible to happen and then play the blame game?

Another question that comes to ones mind is what are the parents of the kids going to such schools doing? They surely know as they can see the state of the schools. Then why aren’t they raising an objection? One can understand if the numbers of parents who want to raise an objection are less, it can severely backfire and the child can loose out on the school admission. But then aren’t all parents supposed to be responsible? They are but they don’t seem to be perturbed.

In cases like these it has to be a joint effort and one cannot blame the government authorities only. It is the school and the parents who have to bring to the notice of the NYBD the wrong doings. Then take an action if things are not sorted out in time.

There is more to this case. It was found out that under the NYBD, the hospitals and almost 1/3rd of the buildings are not maintained and therefore, fall in the hazardous category. It is a known fact that over the years of wear and tear, buildings need to be restructured and repairing needs to be done at periodic intervals. But
