Television as we know has had a wider reach than many other means of communication. And what we watch and hear on television has a greater impact on us than just listening to a radio show or reading a book. Why? This is because, we can see the characters moving and talking on television. Their actions seem real. Hence, we relate to them easily.

And taking our television viewing experience a step ahead, university students are now planning to study a popular sitcom to fathom the issues of race, culture and many issues that the social science studies have failed to decipher in the past. The New York University is allowing their sociology department students to do a 10-week study on a popular cop-drama.

This sitcom is hugely popular today and has the president hooked to it as well. A professor from the sociology department stated that wire aka television is something that is now being used for understand more than just the entertainment factor. They term it as the social science fiction.

In many ways the students prefer studying the sitcom as it way much better than going through research papers after paper which is not only tedious but expensive as well.

In the past too, television sitcoms and programs have been used for study material. Plus it has been seen that television has helped to bring about a positive change in children’s and students lives. For example, the sesame street program which used to air in the past.

Children whose parents were working were left at home watching these sitcoms. The Sesame Street was designed on the line of alternate and fun ways of learning. Kids only enjoyed the show but also had a fair share of learning through this.

This had great effects on children who belonged to the lower strata of the society. They preferred watching this program over playing outside. This meant that they safe in their houses. Sesame Street proved to be of great help to the kids living in Harlem and in the Ghetto regions of USA. It was seen that such kids looked forward to their studies and attended school regularly than before. Education became an invaluable part of their lives.

Coming back to the Sociology studies of sitcoms; the professors at the New York University hope that in the near future, they are able to change the ways of traditional methods of teaching and learning. In the past, however there have been many objections regarding, such learning methods.  But they have overcome now the negativity.

Students in the sociology department have home work for weekends which require them to watch this cop-drama over and over again. This means they have access to all the seasons. And because it is a popular sitcom, the sociology students are quite the enviable bunch at the university.

So if anyone fancies studying sitcoms, that too popular ones, they must apply to the New York University’s sociology department right away!
